Yamagata Europe is ISO 18587 certified for machine translation post-editing

25 Apr 2022

We are proud to announce that Yamagata Europe has obtained ISO 18587 certification for our post-editing process. With this certification, our customers can rest assured that their post-editing project is in good hands with Yamagata Europe, and that we follow a process that guarantees high quality translation. But why do you need post-editing exactly and what is the added value of the ISO 18587 standard?

Machine translation is a great way for businesses to translate vast chunks of text in a short amount of time. Machine translation also offers companies the possibility to translate content that would otherwise not get translated, such as customer support chat content or internal company manuals for technicians.

While machine translations are ideal for projects that need to be completed within a very tight time frame and/or with a reduced budget, they can typically not offer the same accuracy or quality level of a human translator. That’s why, in many cases, we advise an additional stage of post-editing by a professional, industry-specific linguist.

Post-editing comes in two varieties:

  • Light post-editing: The goal here is to make sure that the content is comprehensible, but not more than that.
  • Full post-editing: Here, the aim is to obtain a translated product that equals the quality of a human translation.

The ISO 18587 certification, which Yamagata Europe has obtained now, refers to full post-editing. According to ISO 18587, translation after full post-editing must be accurate, comprehensible, and stylistically adequate, with correct syntax, grammar and punctuation.

What does ISO 18587 mean for your machine translations?

ISO-certified post-editing jobs guarantee that:

  • No information has been added to or omitted from the original text.
  • Inappropriate content has been edited.
  • Sentences have been restructured in the case of incorrect or unclear meaning.
  • The target language is grammatically, syntactically, and semantically correct.
  • Specific client and/or domain terminology has been included.
  • Spelling, punctuation, and hyphenation is correct.
  • The style is appropriate for the text type and the client’s stylistic guidelines have been followed.
  • Formatting is done correctly.
